The Osesp Choir is known for its extensive and diverse activity as a symphonic choir, and for its historically and stylistically broad repertoire. Nonetheless, its performances and recordings emphasise twentieth- and twenty-first-century music, as well as Brazilian music. Its long discography includes the albums Canções do Brasil (Biscoito Fino, 2010), Aylton Escobar: Obras para Coro (Selo Digital Osesp, 2013), José Maurício 250 (Selo Digital Osesp, 2017) and Heitor Villa-Lobos: Choral Transcriptions (Naxos, 2019). During its first international tour, in 2006, the choir sang to Filipe VI, the King of Spain, in Oviedo, at the awards ceremony of the 25th Prince of Asturias Foundation Prize, bestowed upon Pedro Almodóvar, the National Geographic Society, UNICEF, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The ensemble performed under the baton of Marin Alsop at the opening concert of the World Economic Forum, in Davos, Switzerland, in 2020 and again in 2021, where it featured in a virtual film, along with Yo-Yo Ma and artists from seven different countries. Alongside Osesp, the choir made its debut at the Carnegie Hall, in New York, in October 2022, with a concert in the curated subscriptions series and the acclaimed multimedia event “The Amazon Concert: Sights and Sounds of Brazil”, which combines 75 minutes of uninterrupted Brazilian music with video art by Marcello Dantas depicting the riches of Brazilian flora and fauna. The choir was founded in 1994, and initially named São Paulo State Symphonic Choir by Brazilian conductor and composer Aylton Escobar, at the time Director of Universidade Livre de Música (nowadays EMESP Tom Jobim), the institution with which the choir was initially associated. In 2000, the ensemble was incorporated into Osesp and renamed São Paulo Symphony Choir, or simply the Osesp Choir. In its first year, it was conducted by José Ferraz de Toledo, Mônica Meira Vasques, and Aylton Escobar, but soon after, in 1995, Naomi Munakata was appointed as its Chief Conductor and Director, roles she performed memorably and innovatively until 2015. From 2000 to 2016, the Osesp Choir had Marcos Thadeu as its vocal coach, and between 2017 and 2019, the group was led by conductor Valentina Peleggi, with William Coelho as Assistant Conductor, a position he still holds.
